Of course, today in the store you can buy compasses of various sizes, ranging from ordinary school to building. But if you have free time, a carpenter’s compass for the home workshop can be made with your own hands - from scraps of metal.

To make a home-made "eternal" compass, you will need two pieces of a profile pipe 20-30 cm long, a piece of a drill (for wood or metal), nuts with a bolt, and also a steel handle with a slot, which can be made independently from sheet metal.

The main stages of work

The first step is to weld the nuts to the profile sections, which will be connected using a bolt. The edges of the profile pipes (compass legs) are cut off at an angle of 45 degrees, and the place of welding is cleaned with an angle grinder with a petal circle.

Then we clamp the segment of the drill in the drill chuck and grind the tail part under the cone using a grinder. The resulting workpiece is inserted into the profile pipe and scald. In another leg of the compass, drill a hole and weld a nut for the fixing bolt.

At the next stage of work, we connect two halves of the joiner's compass with each other using a bolt or stud with a nut, after which we cut off all excess with a angle grinder or an ordinary hand hacksaw.

You can use the alternator belt tensioner from a truck or tractor as a compass bow. To install the bow in profile pipes, drill holes and weld bolts. Then it remains only to paint the main details and assemble the carpentry compasses.
